An inflammation of the lubricated inner lining of the vagina that is caused by thininng and decreased vaginal lubrication. The most common cause is the decrease in estrogen after menopause; although, it can be caused by other conditions such as those requiring treatment with anti-estrogen drugs. Symptoms include vaginal soreness and/ or itching, painful intercourse, and sometimes bleeding after sexual intercourse. Treatment typically consists of topical estrogen cream and/ or oral estrogen replacement.
Also Known As: vaginal atrophy, vaginal dryness
This condition known as vaginal atrophy, atrophic vaginitis or vaginal dryness occurs mainly in women who have passed the menopause. During the post menopausal period of their lives women can experience a decrease in estrogen levels and this decrease can result in vaginal atrophy. This occurs because the inner lining of the vagina becomes inflamed leading to a severe reduction in vaginal lubrication. The symptoms can be wide ranging and include post coital vaginal pain, vaginal soreness, vaginal itching, irritation, dyspareunia and occasionally bleeding from the vagina. There are various treatments for this condition, therapeutic and non-therapeutic, that will relieve the symptoms of the vaginal atrophy but it is generally recognized that there is no permanent cure.
It is highly recommended that women who begin to experience the symptoms of vaginal atrophy should consider some of the following (1) engage in regular sexual activity, (2) use vaginal moisturizers or (3) the use of vaginal estrogen replacement therapies such as conjugated equine estrogen cream, which is in fact a type of hormone replacement therapy.
